You can learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers as you earn merit badges. There are more than 135 merit badges, and any Scout, may earn any of these at any time. Some are more difficult the others, and before beginning a merit badge, you should consult your scoutmaster to get permission and a blue card. (for more info on a blue card see below.)
A Scout needs 14 Required Merit badges and 7 elective merit badges to earn Eagle Scout.
